Four powerful art dealers join forces, upending traditional model

In one of the strongest signs yet that the art market will not look the same after the pandemic — and in an apparent effort to counter the increasing dominance of megagalleries — four prominent dealers have made the unorthodox decision to consolidate under one roof. Dominique Lévy, Brett Gorvy, Amalia Dayan and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn in January will become LGDR, a consortium that will represent artists, organize exhibitions, advise collectors and broker auction sales. In joining forces, the foursome are betting they will be more effective together than separately at a time when the gallery sector has seen a 20% drop in sales (to an estimated $29.3 billion), and many small and midsize galleries are closing because of the high costs of operating.
